10 Years After Katrina: Zephyr's Story

David Erwin is a J/30 skipper out of New Orleans YC. When he walked down to check out his boat after the storm, this is what he found.

Erwin's story is one of restoration and rebuilding, both on and off the boat. Today, Zephyr 2.0 is on the water in New Orleans. He writes, "We continue to sail 10 years past Katrina. Our sailing program was restored two years post hurricane impact. The new Zephyr V2 program only had three sailors with J/30 experience when we started. On Wednesday nights we have a waiting line ready to go sailing.

Today our harbor is in the same condition post Katrina. We do not have power or water and many slips are not in a condition to use. Before Katrina, we were racing 80 boats on Wednesday nights. After Katrina, we raced 20 boats, slowing adding to the fleet each year. There will be no growth in the sport of sailing until the harbor is rebuilt."
