Free Sailing Opportunity for Beginners

Are you a Beginner Sailor who would enjoy some free sailing?

For those interested in free sailing in Annapolis, the Annapolis Yacht Club, in conjunction with The National On-Water Standards Project, is hosting a National Validation Program sponsored by the United States Coast Guard on May 16-20.  The event is designed to collect data on a national boating education Sailing standard under development by subject matter experts from around the country.

For the event to be successful, the team needs volunteer beginner sailors to operate a sailing dinghy or small keelboat (with competent crew aboard) while being observed. The observers will be gathering information about how well the paper draft of the SAIL standard works in the real world on the water.

This is not a sailing course or a test, so there is no pass, no fail, no pressure! Just an opportunity to go sailing for a few hours and have fun!

The team is looking for sailors over the age of 16 who have some experience operating a keelboat or sailing dinghy but are at a beginner level. They may have completed a beginner sailing course recently or are in the middle of taking one.  Or, they may have the same amount of experience as someone who has just completed such a course - but has never had formal training.

The total time commitment is 4 hours.  Different sessions are available from 8:00AM -12:00pm OR 1:00pm to 5:00pm on any of these dates:

  • Monday, May 16, 2016
  • Tuesday, May 17, 2016
  • Wednesday, May 18, 2016
  • Thursday, May 19, 2016
  • Friday, May 20, 2016

Are you a Sailing Instructor (certification not required), or Powerboat Driver who would like to volunteer for the event?  There is a mandatory training day on Sunday, 15 May 2016, from 8am-5pmThen you can pick any ½ day sessions you are available for, Monday through Friday, 16-20 May 2016.

Come join the team and have some fun while you help to set a national educational standard for sailing!
