CAPCA (2)Captain Kenneth Appleton, USCGR(ret) will be stepping down after three years as president of The Chesapeake Area Professional Captains Association (CAPCA) on 25 November. 

During this period CAPCA’s Continuing Education Chairman Captain John Wesley Nash increased the number of contracted courses and in-house seminars from six (6) to ten (10) currently scheduled.  Captain Nash also developed and maintains a new Twitter feed to provide time sensitive information important to professionals working on Chesapeake Bay.

The Programs Chairman, Captain Priscilla Travis, organized an impressive parade of monthly speakers.  These presentations, given every fourth Monday of the month (except August, November and December) are open to the public.  Over the last three years they have included briefings from the Coast Guard, National Transportation Safety Board, NOAA, MD Natural Resources Police, and the U.S. Navy along many others who addressed relevant areas of the maritime business and its history.  During this period Captain Appleton arranged a tour and briefings for members at USCG Sector Baltimore’s Operations Center and CAPCA Treasurer, Captain Mike Cosenza, USCG (ret), organized a field trip to the space age Maritime Simulation Facility at MITAGS where he works as an instructor.

Captain Karen Holcomb will be taking the helm of CAPCA in November.  Plans are well underway for another active year in 2014.  To learn more see capca.net.
