Racing Roundup: July 15-17

First up, the Screwpile Regatta happened this weekend, and 67 boats showed up to Solomons, MD, to bang around the buoys and take in some distance racing in what is now identified in the hottest city in the state of Maryland. But sailors fought off heat stroke, dehydration, and a general sweat fest to get in three days of light wind racing with some of the best competition on the Chesapeake. The full gallery is here.

The third annual Free State Team Race (FSTR) took place over the weekend off the docks of Severn Sailing Association. 11 teams of three showed up, with experience ranging from "this is my first team race regatta" to some of the most talented college sailing veterans. Race organizers from Annapolis YC did an incredible job, running over 70 races with plenty of tight competition.

Coming out on top:

  1. Ideally 18: Esteban Forrer, Miranda Bakos, Jake Reynolds, Katia DaSilva, Michael Pope, and Tierney Driscoll
  2. Coconuts Migrate: Robert Vann, Megan Hough, Andrew Vann, Jaci Finney, Connor Blouin and Shelby Jacobs
  3. Big Whoop!: Johnny Norfleet, Evan Morgan, Dillon Paiva, Catherine Pelo, Russ O’Reilly and Marissa Golison.

And while it doesn't have much to do with sailing, we have to congratulate two members of Team SpinSheet/PropTalk who tore it up at the Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing Association's Kent Island Regatta. Associate editor Kaylie Jasinski and art director Zach Ditmars participated and came home with some hardware. If you haven't checked out this fun group of folks, you're missing out: some powerboats are totally awesome.
