Racing Roundup: June 18-19

First things first: we're under one month away from the EYC Boomerang Race (July 9), Screwpile (July 14-17), just over six weeks away from Gov Cup, and two months away from the Annapolis Labor Day Regatta. If you haven't registered yet, remember that these are some of the biggest regattas on the Bay, and you don't want to miss out.

First up, the Cock Island Race featured gorgeous weather and plenty of wind. 47 boats showed up to the line and all finished the 8.1 nautical mile course. Parties were, as usual, "top flight," as Lin McCarthy likes to say. Jay Thompson's Restless VIII won the Hanbury Cup for the boat winning her PHRF class by the greatest corrected margin. Class winners are listed below (full results here):

Click for the tracker. Note, there is a four-hour delay.

Now, there's a little distance race happening up north, if you haven't heard. Although 47 boats elected to withdraw after looking at some of the weather forecasts, one boat, Jim Clark's 100-foot Comanche, is already in its berth safe and happy. The rest of the fleet is just starting to hook into the Gulf Stream with a few hundred nautical miles to the finish. At present, Doug Abbott's Cal 40 Flyer is doing great, first in the SDL-3 class and taking off at just over 8 knots. Frank Kendall's Sabre 362, Razor's Edge, is hot on his tail, after pulling a bit north of the fleet. The tracking is set to a rather annoying four hour delay, but it's helpful to keep track of the remaining 13 Bay boats still Bermuda bound.

Christian Filter and Jessica Bennett dominating the Snipe fleet. Jill Bennett got some great photos of these beautiful little boats - click the pic for a larger gallery.

I'd be remiss is I didn't mention the excellent regatta that happened over at Severn Sailing Association, where the 2016 Snipe Junior National Championships took place. It was a little iffy wind-wise, but the afternoon southerlies finally showed up both days and seven races were run for the 13-boat fleet. At the top of the leaderboard was Chrisian Filter with crew Jessica Bennett, who race out of SSA (sail 30552). In seven races, Filter and Bennett had three firsts and 13 points total (their throw out was a 5. Nice work). Christian Cyrul and Max Hetherington-Young out of Privateer YC and Kyle Mergenthaler and Emily Gilreath from Lake Norman YC followed shortly after. For full results, click here.

On the same course, the Comet North Americans were happening. Nine boats showed up and managed to get in six races total. Top three finishers are below, full results are here:

  1. Elliot Oldak / Barbara Best, 5 points
  2. Talbott Ingram / Lee Ingram, 9 points
  3. Brad Meade / Leenie Costanzo, 18 points

The Moonlight Regatta (Deltaville, VA) and the Shearwater Twilight Race (Annapolis, MD) happened as well, bringing in some of the best evening racing on the Bay without having to overnight. In Deltaville, seven boats total showed up to race in PHRF A and B. Mayo Tabb's Excitation and Bob Fleck's Mad Hatter came out on top of both of their divisions, finishing just before and just after midnight, respectively. In Annapolis, racing kicked off just after 5 p.m. and most everyone was back at the docks before the bars stopped serving burgers.

The Don Backe Memorial Crab Cup also took place over the weekend. Three boats with disabled sailors came out to race around Annapolis Harbor in the heat. Congratulations to Tom Ostrye, who took home the win with 13 points in eight races (four bullets!). Ostrye sailed with crew Barb Cantor. Right behind him was Lance Hinrichs with John Tarrant as crew (14 points), and Kevin Detwiler and Tom Chan tied things up with 21 points. Nice work, everyone.
