Rainy Screwpile, Race to Baltimore, and More Racing Roundup July 21-23

Newsflash: Drought Is Over

Well, hello September tropical storm season… er, July racing season. Here’s your SpinSheet Racing Roundup for a wacky, rainy weekend to remember!

Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge 2018

When I asked Southern Maryland Sailing Association Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge (SPLC) organizers if any of them remember such a rainy Saturday, let alone three rainy days of racing at the popular summer event, everyone shook their heads ‘no,’ except for one who said it rained hard in 2000. But, hey, people, there was wind! So, yay for a change in the narrative!

The abysmal weather report kept SpinSheet from trailering the photo boat south (for the first time since the late 90s), but we were there for the Saturday night party, moved indoors (also a first in our memories) to Issac’s Bar. Racers didn’t seem to care, as Mt. Gay Night is a perennial favorite at the summer regatta… We were impressed by the guy who won the prize for having the oldest red hat on the scene, from 1988!

A big thanks to Jana and Rich Rutkowski, who were a huge help at the tattoo both!

At the time of this writing, we believe SPLC results are all in, but consider these preliminary just in case, and expect more in the August SpinSheet. Find full SPLC 2018 results here.
