Miles River Race

The Miles River Yacht Club hosted its annual Annapolis to Miles River Race Saturday, May 26, under sunny skies in south-southeasterly winds from five to 12 knots with favorable currents.... It felt nicer on the water than on land! A pleasant gathering followed at MRYC with some chantey singing madness at the tiki bar later on. Apparently, Tristan on Infectious Smile was sung happy birthday to a few times. Happy Birthday once again, and congrats on a great finish!

West River Heritage Catboat Regatta

Story by Craig Ligibel, photos by Will Keyworth

WRSC Catboat Heritage Regatta photos by Will Keyworth

Some would say the only thing more fun to watch than a catboat race in 3-5 knots of wind is…either watching grass grow or paint dry. Au contraire!

Ten hardy catboat skippers and crews plied the placid waters of the West River just off the docks of Hartge Yacht Harbor in the first ever West River Heritage Catboat Regatta and Rendezvous held on May 27.

“We had boats of all sizes on the line,” says Regatta organizer Paul Cammaroto. “Most of the fleet was composed of Marshall 18’s, with a few 22-footers thrown in and a 14-foot Handi Cat for good measure. We even had a boat trailered up from South Carolina.”

The results of the race were never in doubt, as perpetual Chesapeake Bay Catboat Association sailor Dave Morrow led at the start…and at the finish.

“The rest of us had a nice day on the water watching Morrow’s transom disappear into the distance,” says Cammaroto.

The sailors kept one eye on the weather, but were blessed as the forecasted storms stayed well to the east.

In addition to first-place winner Morrow were: Paul Cammaroto, 2nd. Place and Phil Livingston, 3rd place.

Butch Miller was awarded the inaugural “John Brown Memorial” trophy for the catboater who best embodies the spirit of Brown, who passed away late last year. “John loved life…and he loved boats,” says Cammaroto. “He was most at ease sitting in his cockpit with an adult beverage in hand. Having just finished a three-week voyage from the Eastern Shore to Washington D.C. and back,  with the ostensible purpose of visiting micro breweries along the route… we felt Butch was most deserving of the first John Brown trophy.”
