5 Things To Do: 4/19-4/21

It’s Springtime in Annapolis! Don’t listen to those weathermen when they say it’s going to be in the mid-30s Sunday morning…they’ve been wrong before! Here at SpinSheet we’re positive that our flip flops are here to stay. And when we checked out the awesome events happening around town, we became even more certain. So put on a pair of shorts and a happy face: it’s time to have some fun.

  1. 557016_10150949658151871_1405633234_nAt Quiet Waters Park you can run a 5K with your dog! For real! The race benefits VetDogs, a non-profit group that specializes in training and placing wounded veterans with therapy dogs. The dogs either provide physical, occupational, or emotional therapy to wounded soldiers and active duty personnel. The heartbreaking truth is that a military veteran takes his or her own life every 23 minutes in our country, but programs like VetDogs are actually working to help out. It’s only $35 to run in the race, and you can bring your own pooch with you. We recommend you do it. We only wish we could do something like this more often.
  2. croquet6The Navy vs. St. Johns Croquet Tournament Legend has it that back in 1982 a Mid was bragging to a Johnnie and said “Navy can beat you in any sport.” So the Johnnie replied “How about croquet?” And just like that, one of the greatest sports rivalries in history was begun. Nowadays, look for the Johnnies to wear fun costumes while the Midshipmen wear uniforms adhering to the U.S. Croquet Association’s guidelines (I know…we didn’t believe there was a U.S. Croquet Association either, but we looked it up). Bring a picnic, and ladies bring a bonnet. Annapolis is about to look like it’s hosting a Lily Pulitzer convention, and I mean that in the very best way possible.
  3. Metropolitan-201209-87-of-182You KNOW it’s springtime when there’s rooftop seating at Metropolitan. And I’m not talking about New Year’s Eve, when they tell you that but really, we disagree with that idea. Anyhoo, Friday night they’ll be opening up the roof for their Rock the Roof Party and introducing their spring menus, which we’ve already tried in advance (swoon!). Van Gogh vodka will also be there with an ice luge. This is going to be fun.
  4. Maryland Avenue is sort of the hidden gem of Annapolis in a way. Fewer tourists, cool shops, great food. And this Sunday they’ll be doing their own thing with the Maryland Avenue and State Circle Spring Fling, normal_andyanderson-edwaterfeaturing Arts, Antiques, Fashion, Food, and More. It’s a great time to get outside and walk around, meeting locals and enjoying some of the finer parts of living in this glorious city.
  5. The Boatyard Bar and Grill Spring Fishing Tournament   is this weekend, so expect hundreds of sailors and fishermen to head into the BYBG parking lot for the Catch, Photo and Release portion of the tournament. There are a few things that make us happy to live in this area every day: fishing on the Bay and dinners at the Boatyard Bar and Grill are at the top of that list.
