The Must-Do Event for MULTIHULL Sailors!

The 2014 Down the Bay Race for the Virginia Cruising Cup welcomes multihull sailors. Who's in???

Multihull Sailors – Beg, borrow or steal a boat because this is not something you will want to miss!  A group of interested sailors worked with our good friends at Hampton Yacht Club (HYC) and they have invited multihulls to join in the Down The Bay Race!  Afterwards enjoy the perfect positioning at the mouth of the Bay and great time of year, for the cruise of a lifetime.  What a great opportunity for racers to cruise and cruisers to race in the boats we all love!

The Down The Bay race is a legendary 120 nm race that runs the length of the Chesapeake Bay from Annapolis to the bottom of the Bay near Norfolk and starts at 1000 on the FridayMay 23.  We already have enough sailors planning to race to have a class start and we would love to have you join us.  This is the perfect race for a multihull to stretch its legs and there are parties at both ends – before the start and at the finish!  Multihull class ratings will be managed as is usual for Corsair Nationals or Trimaran Nationals and there is no need to join any local organization.  We will make use of a National multihull PHRF database and the non-biased experts managing same are dedicated to producing fair and close racing for all involved.

With the race ending at the mouth of the Bay at the welcoming HYC, you are perfectly situated for a leisurely cruise back up the Bay hitting all the Eastern Shore must see places that you have read about, or even a run up the Atlantic coast to the victorian charm of Cape May (from there scoot up the Delaware bay, through the C&D canal, and back down to Annapolis hitting all the northern Chesapeake must see places).  If you don’t see dolphins along these coastal waters you must have been sleeping!!  If you are in a rush though, its easy to do a quick haul out (single point lifts and ramps) and trailer home on good roads.

An additional possibility to the DTB is afforded by our friends running the Southern Bay Race Week regatta, the following weekend starting Friday May 30 .  They have also kindly invited multihulls to their event which usually attracts about 100 boats for very good reason.  Like the DTB its extremely well run and is three days (Friday – Sunday)… and catch this multi sailors; day 1 includes triangles (reaching legs J), day 2 a distance race, and day 3 has windward/leewards.

Check out the NORs on line at hamptonyc.com and reach out to Russ Wesdyk ([email protected], cell 443-980-0434) or any of the other interested skippers below if you have questions.  Our plan is to do Down The Bay and solicit interest about SBRW.

Keith Chapman - F27, Tim Layne - Reynolds 33, Tim Lyons - TPI 41 trimaran, Doug Palmer - F27, Paul Parks - Seacart 30, Russ Wesdyk - F27

If there is just one event you do this year… this is the one to do!   We hope to see you there.
