  • Approaching the second mark

Ran Dangerous with 3 today for an interesting Wednesday night race. Shifty winds resulted in an upwind/reaching race, and we remained very competitive. Shortened course due to lack of wind, and second overall. Cleaning the bottom last week made a world of difference in our speed.

Down at SMSA this evening for the monthly BOD meeting and I decided to get a quick paddle in beforehand. Ran up Mill Creek to the end of Leason Cove and back. A nice 4 miles out and back and a great way to continue my long streak of days.

I was determined to get a century club day in today and the forecast was iffy so I hedged with two outings.

Outing #1 on an SUP off SMSA. I felt much better this morning and glassy conditions led me to head out to Drum Point and back. Made 4ish mile run in a little over an hour and enjoyed a nice ride.

Outing #2 on Dangerous for some Screwpile prep. Much heavier conditions than we were expecting led us to put the #3 up, and worked with some new crew members on basic tacking maneuvers. Briefly got the spin up, but true wind near 20kts had us behind the power curve on managing it so we doused before the first gybe. Saw 7+ kts and got a little taste of what the boat will do under a kite in heavy air. Did some more upwind practice before hightailing it to the harbor to outrun a looming thunderstorm.

Wanted to take a Sunfish out again today but the weather threatened thunderstorms all day with very little wind. Ended up getting down to SMSA in the evening to take a brief paddle in between forecasted storms. Rode up Mill Creek for about an hour. Hot and sticky and I wasn't really feeling it today but glad I got out there and got another day in.

Very quick paddle this evening after helping Dewey dive his boat.

Decided it was too hot to run so instead I took a quick, hot paddle off Clarke's Landing out to PR8 and back. Some good wildlife viewing, saw a heron and some rays up close. The jellyfish are out big time now. Nice to be out there as always.

  • Flying the big yellow kite

Got some good action this Wednesday. Medium light conditions put us in an advantageous position. Tacked up to PR3 and had a couple close crossings. Got in a tidy spin set and played with sailing angles for best VMG on the downwind leg. Close to the finish we found ourselves approaching on port and had to negotiate rights with several competing boats. I was pretty exhausted coming off the holiday weekend but nonetheless had a fun time.

Slipped out for a quick AM paddle before my 4th plans got going. Did an hour off the end of Camp Calvert Rd up Breton Bay towards McIntosh Run. Great weather for a quick morning ride.

Took one of the club's old Sunfish for a rambling afternoon sail around the river basin. Rode light conditions up to the bridge, where I became becalmed for a bit. The wind slowly filled back in, and I enjoyed a nice downwind run in front of the Solomons boardwalk. I set up a deep reach, and continued downriver to Drum Point before heading back up to the harbor. I had a lot of fun playing with the boat and enjoying sailing in its purest form.

  • Working the spin set

Out on the Interlake tonight with John. Light conditions prevailed, but we were still able to get two races in. Got a flawless start on the second race, only to be recalled as the rest of the fleet got stuck behind the RC boat. I learned how to do a spin set and douse for the first time on this boat, and got some good tips on transitioning from downwind to upwind sailing efficiently. The evening finished with a great sunset.
