Light night. Decent start but had to tack to make the first mark and lost all gain in the run. finished 6 of 7 boats. Sigh.
Century Club: Claude Speed
Fourth race of the series and we came in third. Nice night for a sail and some of our new processes worked well but we missed a few tactical opportunities to shave off time. Sigh.
Performed as race committee. Winds started as 17-19 kts from north and increased to sustained upper 20s with gusts to 30+. Many challenges getting the race started and with documenting the finish. 9 boats started and 6 finished. Got the mark buoy tangled on the rudder when picking up but was able to motor in without incident.
Winds SSE 12-16 kts, seas relatively flat. We saw 8.5 kts boat speed on the reaching leg. Had to let the main out completely on upwind legs to keep from being over-powered but still maintained good speed. Docked bow in because I was unable to back down fairway. Finished the race in second by 58 sec. had to take two turns after a foul at the second mark.
First race with LCSA. The crew did well, I didn't mess up on the helm, and we won our class.
Twas such a nice day, we decided to immerse ourselves in the blessings of sun, sea, and favorable winds.
Took Aspire out to test some newly installed gear and to have lunch. Winds were east at 15 kts so put both sails up with one reef. They worked fine, making about half the wind speed on both reach and close hauled. Sailed to Thimble Shoals and back. Took about 6 tries to get backed in to the fairway, but was finally successful. Very entertaining to all the local boaters. Sigh.
Got out with the crew to start working out the cobwebs for racing with LCSA this year.
Yesterday we installed the new main sail on Aspire. Since the weather was so nice today, we took here out to test it. Winds started out at about 2 kts but freshened to 12 kts as we headed towards Hampton then dropped again to 1.5-2 kts. We got to experiment with various trims in multiple wind speeds. Cool. Then as we turned into Fisherman's Creek, the wind picked up to 10-12 kts again to help us dock. Sigh.
