Trip length:
1 day
Type of watercraft:

Today had us depart before sunrise as we had two timed bridges and a timed lock to negotiate. An unanticipated delay resulted from two freight trains that crossed a normally open draw bridge. Our trip to the first swing bridge was serene, with glass smooth water and patches of fog. Our trip through Portsmouth and Norfolk was bustling with activity. As we exited the James River we encountered 15-20 knots from the East. We started out close reaching with double reefed jib and finished the ride up the York River with full main and jib and three foot waves boosting our speed to an occasional 9 knots.

We anchoraged in Sarah Creek across from the York River Yacht Haven Marina and dinghied ashore.  Our evening was topped off by dinner with Nick and Nissa at the marina restaurant. Despite the two hour delay with locks and bridges, we covered the 61 nm journey in 12 hours.

Anchorage: Sarah Creek off the York River

Distance today: 61 nm
