Blustery wind, ranging from 10 knots apparent to 20, and could not raise the mainsail all the way. Main was reefed, but could not raise enough to hold the main taut. Very frustrating. Tried for 30 minutes in various nearby places where I could put the boat in the lee of the wind without running aground. Finally gave up and took main down and took the genoa out. Went 4 knots genny only, and that was fine.
Went out two days later to assess, and found that top two Harken battcars, which hold the headboard to the mast track, did not have all the Torlon ball bearings they're supposed to (53 out of 80. Supposed to be 20 each; had 19, 10, 12, and 12), and we're hoping that is the problem. Other possibility is that the track itself is out of alignment. Sure hope not. Ordered replacement ball bearings from Harken; hopefully will be able to figure out how to get them into the battcar and that once I re-assemble them on the mast that the problem is solved. We'll see.
