In preparation for getting my old boat back in the water this summer, I spent much of the day sanding, staining and varnishing the exterior woodwork. Although the hull is fiberglass, there is a lot of wood on this boat - which contributes to its classic appearance but whose upkeep requires a good deal of work. Once the boat is in the water, I usually apply a fresh coat of varnish about every month.
