A Quick Overview of Sail Controls
Hop on pretty much any dinghy, and there is a profusion of lines. Even on a smaller boat with minimal rigging such as an ILCA, you still get to play with vang, cunningham, outhaul, and more. Oftentimes back onshore after racing, conversation in the boat park includes questions like “What vang setting were you using?”

But the magic isn’t in the equipment: It’s in constantly making small adjustments as the wind changes. If you are newer to dinghy sailing, having to tweak so many controls can be overwhelming. Start by simplifying your adjustments. Add nuances as you gain more experience and build your mental database of what works.
Here’s a quick overview of the controls you’ll encounter most frequently. My mantra is that if it feels funny, change something! These controls don’t work in isolation—you’ll need to continually tweak more than one control. To keep it simple, you can boil it down to each control affecting a different part of a sail.
The vang has perhaps the most readily visible effect on your sails, especially the back third. To oversimplify it, the vang controls how much the boom can rise. The result is that vang controls how much your mainsail twists and how open (or closed) your leech is. That’s because when the boom rises, the top of the mainsail is able to twist away from the wind. While some twist is good, too much allows wind to spill out of your sail, losing power. Super twisty can also be super scary downwind in stronger breeze. Keeping vang on can help you keep control, but have that vang control line at hand. When you need to blow it, you’ll need to do so quickly.
The outhaul controls the depth (fullness) of the mainsail. Tightening the outhaul, which pulls the clew farther out on the boom, flattens the sail, especially the bottom third of it. In light air, having a fuller sail can give you more power. As the breeze builds, pulling on more outhaul—flattening the sail—helps to depower the boat. Even small adjustments to the outhaul can have a big effect.
To make changes to the luff of your sail, you use cunningham. Putting on more cunningham pulls down on the luff (forward edge) of the sail. Pulling on cunningham removes horizontal wrinkles in the sail. When it gets windier, the draft (the deepest part of the sail) wants to move farther back in the sail, and it gets deeper. Moving the center of effort of the sails aft makes the boat want to round up, giving weather helm. Having to constantly drive to correct weather helm means the rudder is constantly at an angle to where you want to go—the “barn door” effect— and that is slow! Pulling on cunningham moves the draft forward and helps your sail work more efficiently in higher wind. Of course, the opposite is true when you need more power in lighter air: Often main cunningham is completely slack to support a more powerful sail.
You may have a jib cunningham as well, and it serves the same purpose. If you’re changing one cunningham, you likely need to change the other as well. Having both sails working in similar ways improves airflow over both sails.
While not technically a control line, jib halyard tension is related. In light winds, slightly less halyard tension allows the jib to develop a fuller shape for additional power. As conditions become windier, increasing halyard tension flattens the sail, moves the draft forward, and reduces excessive sag in the forestay. On boats without a backstay, increasing jib halyard tension also stiffens the rig and can improve upwind pointing ability.
Another “cousin” of these control lines is the traveler. Its job isn’t to reshape the sail, it’s to reposition it. Sailing upwind, dropping (or easing) the traveler to leeward changes the boom’s angle relative to the boat without significantly changing mainsheet tension, letting some of the wind slip by unused. This lets you reduce heel while maintaining leech tension.
The real magic comes when all of these controls are used together. Through experience and practice, you can use these controls to flatten or deepen your sails as conditions warrant and to adjust them so that your sail plan is balanced and fast. Just a few inches can mean a lot. The process of gaining the knowledge can be just as fun as using it in a race.
