Today, it remains the only offshore race in the world to offer a dedicated Celestial Navigation Class, preserving the art and discipline of traditional navigation while celebrating one of sailing’s greatest skills. It begins with the often formidable task of escaping Buzzards Bay, where strong southwesterlies, steep seas, and adverse currents can create one of the most difficult opening beats on the East Coast.
Once offshore, crews must determine the optimal route to intercept the Gulf Stream, balancing weather, currents, and tactics to take maximum advantage of one of nature’s most powerful conveyor belts. Finally, success often hinges on carefully planning the approach to Bermuda, where changing winds, island effects, and precise navigation can determine the outcome after more than 600 nautical miles at sea.
