Portsmouth Boat Club... Elections and Pizza Party!

pbcburgeeWhat better way to “celebrate” the coldest January 7th on record than to have a pizza party, hold elections, and planthe upcoming year’s activities?  That is precisely what the members of the Portsmouth Boat Club did!

Elected for the 2014 term were: Rich Dodson, Commodore; Steve Ormsbee, Vice Commodore; Linda Creecy, Secretary; Jim Simpson, Treasurer; John Yares, Director; and Andy Anderson, Director.  Additionally, Terry Shultz was appointed Director to fill an election-induced vacancy.

Getting ready to race!  The 2014 friday night “Barnacle Racing” program will be conducted in three series.  Unique to the Southern Bay, the Barnacle races are conducted on the Elizabeth River with a start/finish line between Norfolk’s Waterside and the Portsmouth Seawall.  Courses vary from 2 to 10 miles depending on the wind strength and available daylight.  In addition to ever-changing winds and challenging river current, racers must yield to tug and barge traffic and the occasional merchant ship as they round government marks on the River.

The Spring Series will be conducted on: April 4th, 11th, 18th; May 2nd and 9th, with a final long race on Saturday, May 17th.

The Summer Series, which is designed for training/practice/fun, will be conducted on: July 11th, 18th, 25th; August 1st, 15th, and 22nd.

The Fall Series will be conducted on: September 5th, 12th, 19th; October 3rd and 10th, with a final long race on Saturday, October 25th.

Both the Spring and Fall series are “for score” under PHRF with trophies going to the top three boats in each class.  They also feature a very popular “cookout at the Clubhouse” after each race.  The Notice of Regatta is published on the Club’s website.

Getting ready to cruise!  PBC’s cruising program is growing each year, under the leadership of Bud Brueggeman.  This year, the cruising schedule includes:
