A Wet and Wild Racing Weekend
Well, that was fun. So said a couple of hundred sailing-crazy competitors after a wet, wild, windy racing weekend at the NASS Fall Oxford Race. Those who arrived for the upcoming J/22 Worlds looked out on the Bay, or even went out to practice, with some hope for big breeze. (Weirdly, Saturday offered light air on the Southern Bay for the Tri-Services Regatta--see more below). Here’s your racing roundup for the weekend of September 8-9.
NASS Oxford Race
Often just called “Fall Oxford,” the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron’s fall race from Annapolis to Oxford has a reputation for heavy winds, one of many reasons it’s often one of the largest Bay races of the season. Ninety-four of 120+ registered boats completed the 30-mile race Saturday, September 8, in heavy northerly breeze with consistent winds in the high teens to low 20s with gusts up to 30.
It was a gear-buster. We heard reports of shredded sails, lost halyards, and one broken tiller, and at least one competitor who landed himself in the ER for stitches. Hopefully that’s all that went wrong—as that’s enough. We did not hear any reports of more serious injuries.
Thanks to NASS for running a great race on a challenging day and to Tred Avon Yacht Club for hosting the post-race festivities. If you have a story from the race or the rough ride home on an even sportier (and rainier) Sunday, please reach out to [email protected].

Tri-Services Cup Regatta This just in from Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use by Lin McCarthy: On Saturday, NORFOLK NAVAL SAILING ASSOCIATION won the 2018 Tri-Services Cup regatta, an annual showdown among the three armed services yacht clubs in the Hampton Roads area: NNSA, Old Point Comfort YC, and Langley Yacht Club. Conditions on Saturday, light air and strong-strong current, made completing the course at least difficult and actually near impossible. As a solution, the course was shortened at Thimble Shores Light. Of the 33 boats entered, 11 had difficulties at the git-go and could not get across the starting line. Perseverance became the word of the day. Spinnakers are not allowed in the Tri-Services and the fleets are evenly divided between Non-Spinnaker and Cruising. RESULTS: NS 1 – 1.Elixir, Chris French, NNSA; 2.Ganar, Dave Bouchard, OPCYC; 3.Jeneral's Lady, Jim Chapman, NNSA. NS 2 – 1.Blue Ghost, Guy Sorensen, NNSA; 2.Virginia Lee, Mike Brannon, NNSA; 3.Charis, Dick McCrillis, NNSA. NS 3 -1.Papahu, Andrew Norris, OPCYC; 2.Halaha, Jeff Rogers, OPCYC; 3.Excelsior, Steve Ritz, OPCYC. CR 1 – 1.Old Crow, Scott Nielsen, NNSA; 2.Black Dog, Jim Beaudry, OPCYC; 3.Lucky Star, John Peterson, NNSA. CR 3 – 1.Study Hall, Diana Hughes, NNSA. 2.Allegory, Jim Gordon, NNSA; 3.Luna Blu, Keith Midgette, OPCYC. Principal Race Officer - Bob Williamson; Official Scorer - Tim Etherington Severn Sailing Association Let’s give credit where it’s due: it’s one thing to go out on such a sporty weekend in Chesapeake country in a 20,000-pound cruising boat with canvas coverage and space and cushions for napping down below and another thing to go out in a 14-foot dinghy and power your way through the rain, wind, and chop. Sailors at SSA did the latter for its 505 Fall Series and Laser/Laser Radial Regattas. It was great to see so many small boats out enjoying the breeze on Saturday in Annapolis!
