Today's member sail was supposed to have wind that barely broke 6kt with temps up to 90.  We took Akimbo out with Hunter and Jessa.  The heat was strong as promised, but once we got out past Ft McHenry, the wind made up for it: a strong 8-12kt gusting 16+, mostly from the west, which made for a quick trip out to Ft. Carroll.  Really fun sail, in good company.

Signed up to rig/de-rig for today's accessibility event.  We had an awesome turnout, managed to get 8 boats into the water and fill 4 Sonars too.  Wind was kind of light (3-5 NE gusting maybe 8) but that's still enough for a Hansa to have fun.

  • Instructing underway
  • The neatest anchor line!

Went down to DSC after work to crew for Hunter and Rich as they practiced for thei upcoming skipper checkouts. They're doing great! I didn't wind up with any helm time, but I also didn't have to haul the anchor out of the Harbor, so I would call that a fair deal.

After work, Rebekah took out Hunter and Rich for practice on Akimbo.  I tagged along to help out.  We all had a chance to do a couple POBs, and they both got to do a little docking too.  Moderate winds from the east-ish, around 8-10kt, and fair weather; she performed noticeably better than last year with the fresh bottom paint and prop cleaning.  Of course, it can't all be good news: somehow the haul-out seems to have introduced electrical issues with the engine, and now the choke button does nothing.  On the bright side, we all got to learn where the air intake lives...

  • I felt awkward taking crew photos with strangers, so have a pic of Rich and his crew

Volunteered to crew for I Love SoBo Day, which has a special place in my heart: it was only 2 years ago at SoBo Day that we took our first sail with Scott and wound up joining DSC!

Wind was pretty significant with lots of variation and serious gusts, probably 5-15 gusting 20+ at times, with direction shifting throughout the 3 or so hours.  We took out two groups of really nice people -- hope to see you all at a member sail soon! -- and the skipper, Itay (who I don't think I've sailed with before, but was great) was kind enough to let me do both our dockings.  The downwind one at the end came in a little hot but we landed OK, so I'm calling it a victory.

  • Note how much nicer the bow looks already...

After a morning spent watching the start of the annual Kinetic Sculpture Race, I headed over to the Clinton St Marina to help with maintenance on Akimbo.  There was a great turn-out and the crew had already gotten the bottom scraped and started painting by the time I got there.  I spent most of the time working on the top-sides taking a Brillo pad and some FSR to the vairous stains, scuffs and scrapes that had accumulated in the 3 years since her last haul-out.  It's hard work but it made a big difference, I think, and she looks a lot nicer now.

Weather didn't look great for the member sail today but we decided to try our luck anyway.  Rich is working on his cruising skipper checkout so we took Akimbo to give him some time on the helm and at least get the sails out.

I'm testing out some "hand me up" foulies so I figured this would be a good, short-ish trial run.  Rebekah was right, though -- the Helly bibbs are not as waterproof as I'd like; I had to change into dry pants after I got home.  Glad we got out, but it was even too wet to manage a crew photo.

  • Crew photo includes Joanna's new "high vis" foulies

Joanna very graciously volunteered to skipper for skill building, so we set out with Sarah for a chilly Sunday afternoon.  I got in some good quick-stops and one or two sort of passable figure-eights, then returned for a really good series of dock approaches from just about every wind angle.  Sarah had to leave a little early so the end of the day was basically a private lesson -- I got some good feedback and really think it helped with my confidence.  Thanks, Joanna!

  • The main was a little finicky
  • Spinnaker looked good even with barely any wind

Went with Rebekah to lend a hand getting Huzzah set up for the season.  Not sure how useful I was and the wind died to almost exactly zero, but at least the weather was awesome.

Some POB and docking practice, had to hurry back to get in on time -- unfortunately couldn't even get a crew photo! -- but a really nice day.
