J/70s Worlds: Bay Boats Lookin' Good

For the first day of the J/70 Worlds, winds were out of the east/northeast at 18-20 knots, and the Rhode Island Sound was, in a word, "bumpy." But that didn't stop 86 boats from heading out to the line for the first start just a few minutes after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9.

A total of 14 Bay-area J/70s are in town for the J/70 Worlds hosted by New York YC, and after two days of qualifying rounds, we're impressed by our own.

Henry Filter's Wild Child at the 2014 J/70 World Championship presented by Helly Hansen, sailed between September 8-13 and hosted by the New York Yacht Club at Harbour Court. Henry Filter onboard Wild Child and Jenn and Ray Wulff onboard Joint Custody are currently both in the top ten, with 31 and 33 points, respectively.

Chris and Carolyn Groobey onboard Jungleland are having a great regatta, placing consistently in the top 20 for a 19th place spot currently. Pete McChesney is right behind them onboard the aptly named Trouble, at 24th place. McChesney is currently in fourth place overall for the Corinthian results. He's sailing with Scott Snyder and Shane Zwingelberg.

The Chesapeake fleet is keeping the protest room busy, too. Tom Bowen's Reach Around met up with Tom Iseler's Tsunami in the first race, and again with Sugar Daddy in the second race, resulting in favorable rulings for Bowen. Henry Filter apparently had some discussions with the Race Committee, resulting in a favorable ruling for Wild Child, which we can't wait to hear all about.

The regatta is having racers use an app to track their regattas, which you can then view using the RaceQs installer here. It's free, and shows 3D replays of each race.
