Governor’s Cup Yacht Race

Can you say big breeze on the nose? The 117 competitors who participated in the 70-mile (for the Annapolis to St. Mary’s leg) and 46-mile (for Potomac and Fishing Bay to St. Mary’s legs) Governor’s Cup were to busy beating in fresh to strong breeze down the Bay to utter such foolishness as “there’s no wind in August.”

PLANTATION LIGHT RACE

As night time distance races go, this one was memorable for what did not happen. From Saturday evening between 7 and 7:20 into the wee hours of Sunday morning there were not thunderstorms, no big ships blowing 5 blasts, no wild and wooly winds and seas.

The mouth of the Chesapeake was as lovely as it gets in the summertime.Among the 13 boats there were some equipment failures, a tenacious crab pot, and a navigation mistake which caused individual retirements, but, other than that, the 2017 Plantation Light Race was in the books when the last boat to cross the finish line did so around 4:30 AM Sunday.

RESULTS:

PHRF A (5 boats) 1.Ian Hill, Sitella; 2.Jim Bordeaux, Solstice; 3.Neil and Lis Ford, Danger Paws

PHRF C (3 boats) 1.Alan Bomar, Roundabout; 2.Ben Cuker, Callinectes; 3.Jeff Rogers, Halaha

PHRF Non-Spin (5 boats) 1.Jay Thompson, Restless; 2.Bill Ripley, Obsession

Principal Race Officer – Bob Thomas.

VIRGINIA GOVERNORS CUP:

Trent Levy wins the Virginia Governors Cup.  Trent picked up the Cup by winning the largest fleet in the regatta.  There were 14 Laser Radials racing at Ware River this past weekend.  Eight classes were represented: Albacore (4), Buccaneer (3), Laser Radial (14), Hampton One Designs (8), Laser (2), Wayfarer (3), Windmill (2), Mutineer (1), and a Portsmouth handicap class (4).

In addition to Trent Levy (Laser Radial winner) class winners included: Marty and John Minot (Albacore); Jimmy Yurko and Evan Scott (Buccaneer); Montague and Montague (Hampton One-Design); Frank Paldin (Laser); Richard Johnson and Michelle Parish (Wayfarer); Frank Murphy and Chris Kennedy (Windmill); Scott Bush and Billy Lancaster (Mutineer); and, the Portsmouth class was won by John Meyer in a Sunfish.

The Congressman’s Cup is awarded each year to a participant who exhibits exceptional sportsmanship qualities and fosters an exceptional spirit of sailingEvent Chairman, Clayton James said, “This year the Congressman’s Cup was awarded to Joel & Kristin Morgan from Richmond, VA. Joel and Kristin sacrificed life and limb as they helped rescue another non-regatta boat from sinking and safely managed to get the boat a crew back to shore. Their heroism was recognized by the entirety of the regatta participants during the awards ceremony.”

In addition to the adult classes racing, nineteen Optimist racers were at the Virginia Governors Cup.  Guthrie Braun finished first overall in the Opti Fleet and was awarded the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce Trophy. Ware River Yacht Club hosted this annual event.
