Racing Roundup: July 9-10

What a great weekend of sailing! A pretty serious thunderstorm rolled through the area on Friday afternoon, but you'd never know it based on the gorgeous skies and pleasant breeze we had on Saturday and Sunday. Here's what happened.

The Eastport Yacht Club hosted their inaugural Boomerang Race July 9. The race started out with a nice southerly that slowly clocked to the northwest, with winds at about 10-15 on average. This meant that the almost 70 boats that showed up for the long course (62 nautical miles) had a beat both legs. On the lawn of Eastport YC later that day, no one was complaining. Steady wind, gorgeous skies, and ending up where you started: can't beat it. Here are the top three in each class; look for full results and recap in the August issue. Hampton Yacht Club hosted their annual Doublehanded Race on Saturday. Greg and Carie Cutter and Justin and Elizabeth Morris, both husband and wife teams, were fleet winners in the PHRF fleet and the Sonar fleets respectively.  The Briggs Brothers, Scott and Glenn, took Phil Briggs’ Feather to a second place finish and Ben Cuker and crew in Callinectes were third in the six- boat fleet. Among the 3 Sonars racing, Ron Thompson and crew finished second. The racing was in Hampton Roads Harbor on Sunday afternoon.  Breezes were moderate, but shifty, requiring the sailors constant attention to sail trim as they navigated the multiple leg course around fixed marks. Race Officers were Rich Wilcox and Catherine Ryan.

Eastport Yacht Club and East of Maui certainly brought the aloha vibe to the water on Saturday morning, hosting the EOM-EYC Chesapeake Stand Up Challenge. The open water race set in Annapolis Harbor and the Severn River had either a 6.5-mile course or a 3.5-miler for "more novice paddlers" (I'm personally exhausted just thinking about that). Nice work to all who paddled the event; such a gorgeous day for a great race. More of Dan Phelps's photos for SpinSheet are here. Full results are here.

Finally, Broad Bay Sailing Association (BBSA) turned out 23 boats Saturday morning to race for bragging rights within the club. Boats from the BBSA Little Creek SA and from the BBSA Willoughby Racers groups met in the middle, in neutral waters, off Norfolk’s West Ocean View to compete in the inaugural race for the BBSA  Broad Bay Sailing Cup. When it came time to tally the group standings, a tie between Willoughby and Little Creek was broken in Willoughby’s favor. Willoughby boats had two first place finishers to Little Creek’s one. FLEET WINNERS WERE: Spinnaker (6 boats) – Mike Veraldi, Quicky (LC)Non-Spinnaker 1 (9 boats) – Ben Ritger, Blew J (WR);  Non-Spinnaker 2 (9 boats) – Robert Duncan, Oh Sheet (WR). For complete results click on “BBSA Broad Bay Sailing Cup” are listed here.  Thanks to Anchor Yacht Sales for catching some great photos on the Race Course.
