I forgot to log trips for over a week.  3 days worth of on-the-water time for work, all potomac river cruises.  I had a trip with a bunch of Koreans who were visiting!  Its always cool showing the city from the water to people from my home country.

I haven't been able to get on the water much past week or so.
I skippered a boat for Social sail last Thursday, for my sailing club, SCOW.  I took a friend out on a flying scot too.  No pictures this time!

  • what am I thinking about?
  • Joe!!

Today was super cool.  I had a last minute booking from a guest who was on my boat last year!  Its so flattering to see people book the same trip again.  I hope they book a sailing cruise next time -- I'd love to introduce them to the wonderful world of sailing.

I went home to take a disco nap and two of my friends joined me to sail a flying scot.  We had a lot of variable winds, but it was enough to get out of the lagoon and sail around the Potomac river.  On my way out, I saw Nate Y, a local sailing legend.  He impressively recognized me from far away!  On our way back in, my flying scot tutor and former commodore of SCOW, Joe L. and the current skipper director, Eric S. was on their way out on one of the club's catalinas.  Super cool!

Back in the lagoon, I had my friend Marta practice sailing in a race track pattern.  She did well, though she still needs some assistance figuring out when we are upwind and downwind.  She is very close to becoming 'someone who likes to sit in a boat' to 'being able to sail on her own.'  3-4 sessions is all she needs, as long as she keeps trying.

  • Kelley and Peter enjoying the view of the Regatta
  • Father - daughter bonding time
  • Guest even got to fly his drone!

I had a promotional trip on Tuesday with the wonderful Kelley from daycationdc.com.  I know this was technically a work trip but I really enjoyed having her and her husband aboard.  We saw a regatta happening in old town alexandria!  We got to hit up all of the trip areas (I usually only have time for 2/3 areas) and chatted the night away.

Today I had a amazing cruise with people my parents' age and their adult daughter.  I am so lucky that I can provide experiences like that to families.  I think my guests got some great father/daughter bonding time.  My primary guest (the one who booked) spent decades water skiing, including foiling boards.  I got the sense he will love sailing, so despite it being a pleasure cruise, we did a couple of maneuvers together, with him at the helm for some time.

On 5/30, on an almost windless day, I took my fried Carlos "Carlito" out for a sail.  He is always very skilled with his hands and he picked it up quickly.  We got tired of the lack of wind and quit after a few hours.

  • Guests aboard my company's power boat, Cortina

On Monday, I went out for some flying scot practice with a friend (MK) from my sailing club.  In preparation for Thursday's Social sail event, where I would take out new people on the sailboat.   On Thursday, I was too focused on sailing the boat but thankfully MK did all the talking for me.  Saturday, weather cleared out and I had a few work trips (Reflections DC) to do with some amazing guests.  It was Memorial day weekend and already a lot of people were being dumb and often times illegal out on the water.  Harbor patrol and USCG had their hands full.

I actually took a temporary law gig which is going to put my boat business in the back burner for a month or so.  It was just too good to say no to!  I'm still going to be running the trips over the summer, but on a limited availability basis.

Had some amazing work trips on Saturday.  Then finally go to take Sonora out for a non-work related fun sail with some friends. Had enough winds to really get the boat moving, hitting hull speed for much of the day.

First time as a FS skipper for my club!  No picture this time.  It started as 8knot, dead winds to blowing about 20-22.  I had good crew who sailed dinghies all through high school, so it was no big deal.  Even docked without issue, except on the first try, someone launched their boat towards us so we had to abort and try again.

Weds is the beginning of my work week.  It ends on Sunday.  Yes, my social life has been gone since I did this business!

Wednesday, I got a last minute booking for a sailing cruise.  Took a lovely family of 5, including three little girls ages 5-10, and a well behaved dog on Sonora.  A sailing buddy showed up as volunteer crew.  Sailed in varied conditions, shaking out a reef later in the day.  The children ended up napping during the last hour or so.  The eldest even got some helm time in and did better than most adults that I know. Very adorable trip!

Thursday, I started the day with the Flying Scot skipper checkout process.  I somehow passed.  I was skipping the standard training systsem the club has in place (challenging it is what we call it).  Despite the many tutoring sails I went on, my chaotic mind forgot a few little details. But I still passed.  My club's commodore came to crew for me, and Mike, the club's treasurer who had lived in Korea in the 60's and 70's, came.  I'm really lucky to get all this special attention from my club!  I also had a work trip that evening.

Friday, I had a lovely cruise with a family of four.  The teens were well behaved, and genuinely interested in the sights and stories, which is sort of rare for teenage boys!

I actually have three more trips this weekend.  I'm going to be one tired sailor.
