  • Steamboat Cherry Blossom underway behind us, which is a rare sight
  • Taxi III with what I think is the DC United soccer club logo
  • Fireboat John Glenn Jr (DC Fire Department) shooting off all of her water guns as part of the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony
  • Washington Monument reflecting off of the calm river

5/13 - Took the scot out with my club mentor again.  Did the usual drills, did LOTs of docking practice under sail, then headed out of the lagoon to do some more 'open' water sailing.

5/14 - Had a fully booked work day.  I was wiped after taking guests out from 11AM to 7PM.  Then took the power boat to pick up some friends to get dinner at Navy Yard.  I got home around 10PM.

Last Thursday I skipped out on sailing to let new folks try out sailing on our club boats.  But I did help work on the boats throughout the event.

The on Monday, I went out with one of my mentors from my sailing club (SCOW) to practice a few things so I can be ready to pass the skipper's checkout test.  Learning some things that are club specific has been helpful in expanding on some of my sailing knowledge.  Getitng practice docking a dinghy under sail power alone will also be useful on my cruise.

Weather canceled most of my work trips.  Well, I had some, but they overlapped with events I was already out on the water for.

  • Wind and rail meat induced heel for the photo effect
  • I know this isn't sailing.. but its part of the theme!

My friend Joe, previous commodore and a current member and training skipper for Sailing Club of Washington (SCOW.org) took me and a friend up in the air on a Piper Cherokee.  We flew around on a beauitful day in the skies of Northern Virginia.  After a burrito break, we decided to go sailing too.  We absolutely flew.. on the club's FLYING scot.  It was cool seeing the wake change and look a bit like the one coming off of my power boat -- we spent most of the sailing session on a.. ern.. PLANE!

In an effort to retain more members in their 20's and 30's, I've been more active in my local sailing club.  We host an event called Social Sail, where we gather to meet, hang out, and go sailing on one of the boats from our Flying Scot or Catalina fleet.  3 days on 3 events so far.
