Paddled on the Chesapeake Bay today. Wind was from the NorthEast at 7 mph so the Bay was like glass. Put in at South Beach in Tower Gardens and paddled to the boat ramp at North Beach and back, then south for awhile to get my 2 nautical miles. Temperature was about 50 degrees fahrenheit.
Eastern Bay, east of Kent Island, launch from the beach at Romancoke On the Bay Clubhouse. Paddled south to Cove Creek Marina and back, then north to the Romancoke Fishing Pier and back. Temperature was 51 degrees and the wind was 13 mph from the West Northwest, but the wind was pretty much knocked down where I was. It was smooth sailing so to speak.
Shipping Creek off of Eastern Bay, the Boat Ramp is off of Route 8, Romancoke Road. Wind speed was 16 mph from the South. Shipping Creek is pretty much North and South, but the boat ramp is on a prong that runs East and West, so when the wind is from the south the prong gets shielded from the south wind. I went in the morning because the forcast for the afternoon was for severe weather. Temperature was 59 degrees.
Went to Shipping Creek because the wind was from the SouthEast. Checked the Chesapeake Bay but some of that SouthEast wind had sneaked around the tip of Kent Island and was coming from the SouthWest causing some waves on the Bay. My usual spot on Chews Creek has turned to mud because the Creek and the Bay have merged again and as the tide goes out water on Chews Pond has dropped several feet causing mud at my usual spot, so off to Shipping Creek boat ramp, no mud there. Wind was 12 mph from the SouthEast and the temperature 53 degrees.
Romancoke On the Bay, which is on the shore of Eastern Bay, when the wind is from the West Eastern Bay is on the lee side of Kent Island. Launched off the beach, paddled south to Cove Creek Marina and back and then north toward the Romancoke Fishing Pier and back. temperature was 41 degrees and the wind from the NorthWest at 12 mph. It was a beatifulday compared to the last two days with Gale force winds.
Launched off of the Cove Creek beach, paddled south along the beach and rock jetty wall to the corner, then turned around but could not make back north. So I took the kayak out of the water and dragged it back north and then relaunched it into the Marina and paddled around in the Marina until I got my 2.0 nautical miles. Wind was 20 to 30 mph and gusting to 40 mph. Temperature was about 36 degrees fahrenheit.
Romancoke On the Bay Clubhouse, beach launch. Hugged the lee shore very closely. Winds from the NorthWest over 20 mph, temperature 42 degrees. Went back and forth alone the Cove Creek beach and along the rock jetty by the Cove Creek Marina. Wind and waves also seemed to be coming from the NorthEast. Windy, windy, windy.
Romancoke On The Bay Clubhouse beach launch. As I was putting in the water dark clouds were moving east south of me. When I got onto the water in spit of the fact I was hugging the lee shore line the water was kind of choppy. I considered abborting the mission, but decided to continue. Wind was 20 mph and gusting to 30 or more. Temperature was about 50 degrees. I headed North to get behind some houses to cut off the West wind. That kinda worked for awhile. The wind did drop to about 14 mph toward the end of my ride which made for a smoother ride. There were rolling waves coming out of the southeast, which I did not understand.
Romancoke On The Bay Clubhouse, launch off the beach, paddle to Cove Creek Marina and back, then paddle to the Romancoke Fishing Pier and back. Temperature 55 degrees and the wind from the West at 7 to 9 mph from the West.
