Learning to sail is picking a 5000-year old "hobby" that takes a weekend to learn, a lifetime to master.
Tell us about how you got into sailing? About five years ago I was in my mid-forties, going through a divorce, and looking for a new challenge. So I took an introductory sailing class at J/World Annapolis. I had been on boats in the 1980s but never helped sail them, so I was a true beginner.
Thanks to Mother Nature and the Annapolis Sailboat Show crew, we just had five of the most stellar, sunshine-filled boat show days any of us can remember. Thousands of sailors from around the world flocked to the Sailing Capital to get a peek at the exciting new boats, gear, accessories, and other fun stuff of interest to sailors--even the Auld Mug itself!
Tell us about how you got into sailing? I was well into middle age and looking for a new hobby besides the high-impact sports that I had been involved in since my teens. I’ve always loved the water, so initially I was thinking of deep sea fishing. But sitting around waiting for fish didn’t seem like my thing. Then I spoke with a friend who had been a motor boater and had switched to sailing. With a little encouragement, I started researching sailboats and sailboat racing and took a sailing lesson at D.C. Sail. I was immediately in love with the sport—the water, the wind.
Dinghies, keelboats, racing, and bareboat cruising in the BVI, all in one year! Tell us about how you got into sailing. I grew up in Houston, TX, around powerboats on the Gulf of Mexico; however, I was never exposed to sailing. I moved to Washington, D.C. in 1996 for college and ended up staying in the city for work. That is when I learned about sailing at DC Sail.
