  • Catching a puff near the Seagirt terminal
  • Heading back from the bridge

I was going to be out of town for most of the weekend, but I had some time in the morning before departing, so Bhavani and I sailed out to the bridge. We had about 15 knots of wind with temperatures in the low 50s. We made it upwind to the bridge in about an hour and a half, and made it back to Canton in less than an hour, giving us about an hour or so to practice POBs in the turning basin before heading back to the dock. I managed to slip and fall off the boat while we were de-rigging, but fortunately managed to catch the side of the boat, so I only went knee-deep into the water, though I banged up my forearms pretty well.

  • Start of the first race

Turk, John, Brian, and I crewed the boat while Oleg volunteered on Race Committee. I was in the middle position trimming the spinnaker and working the traveler. We performed rather poorly, but at least didn't crash the boat. ;-)

I took relatively new sailors Jacob and Laura out on a J/22 for their second Member Sail (and first time on a J/22). Winds were relatively light, and died off late, but we managed to make it out to the R2 buoy and got back to the docks right around sunset, though we did need to break out the paddle at the end.

  • Oh, isn't this nice?
  • Welcome to the splash zone
  • Good thing our scuppers work

Kelly, Zack, Tony, and I took a Sonar out to get some practice in strong winds (forecast had gusts up to 30 knots). Given the forecast, we originally planned to stay close to Fort McHenry and finish relatively early. However, on our way out, winds were steady around 10 knots, which lulled us into a false sense of security. We continued all the way out to the Key Bridge. When we turned around, we soon discovered that the winds had increased to 15-20 knots, gusting into the mid-20's, with 1-2' waves coming toward us. The entire boat quickly became a splash zone, but we managed to beat our way back to our dock on time without incident, though we did get quite wet.

We had pretty good wind for the first night of Thursday Night Racing, which was held between the Canton Turning Basin and the area between the NH buoy and the Clinton Street fuel dock. We ran three races. We didn't win any of them, but we also didn't lose any of them.

  • The departure didn't go quite the way we planned

Jen, Kelly, Snow, and I sailed out to Curtis Bay and back in gusty conditions. We got some practice reefing while hove-to, and took on water a few times. Afterwards, I atteneded race committee training, during which we tooled around in powerboats and practiced setting marks.

I went out with Rebekah and James on Akimbo for 5 hours. Rebekah walked me through the presail checks and other maintenance concerns, the we departed and got some practice motoring backwards, doing pivot turns, raising the lowering the sails, heaving-to, and reefing.

We had practice night for Thursday Night Racing in light to moderate winds. The starting line was a bit narrow, but we  (me, Oleg, Turk, and Brian) eventually managed to get through it.
