As we got to Terminal Leave before the sun was up on Saturday morning, our hope was to leave the dock no later than 7am to make our destination 22 miles north near Middleriver for the start of the Northern Bay Distance Race. As all good plans are made, we were close to our departure time, only running 7 minutes behind!

We left the dock ready for our first weekend ‘cruising’ on the Classe Mini 6.50 (21ft stripped out racing boat meant to sail across the Atlantic singlehanded!). With the pup in tow too, we were ready for the nice breeze that the early Saturday morning provided us.

Once out of Back Creek, with the main and jib up we set the spinnaker and started our run up the Bay. The southerly breeze provided great reaching as we worked our way towards the starting area. Cruising with the kite cleated off, driving to the puffs and waves, the boat was really enjoying stretching her legs, showing us speeds of 7.5-9.2 knots. As we sailed under the Bay Bridge we let out a hoot and a howl of joy expressing our thanks for the great ride.

Reaching back and forth across the Bay, the wind speed started to lay down and our ETA to the starting line became later and later. Within VHF range, we could hear the race committee start the fleet with us being about an hour away. We accepted the fact that we were not going to make the start so we watched the fleet from a distance and continued to reach around northern bay.

After 9 hours of sailing we decided to find our dock for the night. The Northern Bay Regatta committee was kind enough to arrange for free dockage for those that participated in the race. We motored into Middleriver and found our quiet and simple dock space for the night, tucked up the creek and settled in for the night.

Sunday morning brought us glassy water with no breeze. Rain was in the forecast as the remnants of hurricane Delta passed over us. We set out for our 6.5 hour motor home. With flat water, no breeze and the rain holding off for the first 3 hours, we had a pleasant motor down the Bay back to Annapolis. Maddon, my boat dog, for how much he loves to swim and be on boats, can’t stand the rain. He found his way down below to our bed of pillows and blankets from the night before, only making his way back on deck as we pulled into Back Creek, a familiar sight for him.

In total we covered 46 miles under sail and another 30 under motor for another great weekend on the water. Because as everyone always says, a day on the water is better than any day in the office!

Doris and I took her Freedom 28 out for a quick evening sail, or at least we tried! The slides on the mainsail were in need of some love and we weren't able to raise the main.

After motoring around for a bit then headed back to the dock as the sun was setting. It was nice to get Summer's Day out for a little bit!

Peter's mom came for a visit and to have her first sail on Terminal Leave, Peter's new to him Class Mini 6.50.

After admiring all of the control lines on board (upwards of 30 different lines!), we push off the dock and head out to the Bay where we were greeted with the incoming Doublehanded Distance Race competitors as they had just crossed the finish line after 24 hours of racing in extremely light and testing breeze.

We too found the breeze to be light but it filled in a bit for us as we reached across the bay. The current was ripping out of the Bay and we decided to hug the shore line until we put the Code Zero up to give us the extra umph that we needed to make some progress upwind against the current.

A lovely 4.5 hour sail provided for another wonderful day on the water and sailing Terminal Leave!

If you are ever looking to learn some basic powerboat skills, look no further than US Powerboating's Safe Powerboat Handling course! This is one of my favorite courses to teach as we cover everything from throttle control to high speed maneuverers.  This time it was offered as an accelerated course, offering close to 7 hours on the water practicing important skills that every powerboater should know how to execute in a safe manner.

The students in my class had no powerboat experience prior to the start of the class and left at the end of the day feeling confident and empowered to safe operate a powerboat. Knowing that skills only improve with practice, each of them were excited to look for opportunities to get back on the water, whether purchasing their own powerboat or going out with a friend.

As both Peter and I race to the boat, we were greeted with a breeze that was better than anyone expected. We quickly rigged Terminal Leave(and our rigging times are getting faster each time!), we shove off the dock and headed to the Harbor.

With the breeze direction out of the west, we reached across the Harbor, passing optis, 420s, Snipes, and the JVOST teams practiveing on a comfortably cool first Friday evening in October! Sailing until sunset, we then made our way back to the dock happy with the quick 2 hour sail we were able to get in.

Despite the light winds and misty conditions, Peter Gibbons-Neff and I headed out on the Bay on his new to him Class Mini 6.50, Terminal Leave. Being our first solo sail on her, we did a few sail changes and crusied over to the Eastern Shore and back. Peter's goal is to race in the Mini Transat next year, a race across the Atlantic in a 21ft boat! I have no doubts he can and will do it, but first time to practice!

Great time sailing in light to no wind on ArtiMisses with the all women team! after sailing for 5 hours, we and the two boats in front of us all agreed to finish in place, giving us a solid third place. It was a beautiful misty day on Baltimore Harbor but the crew dynamic was great and made the day brighter. Thanks to Downtown Sailing Center and glad we were able to get on the water!
