We continued our Patuxent River getaway waking up on the anchor in Battle Creek. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and morning before pulling the hook and motoring out to Red 18 where we popped the yankee sail and took our time sailing south, with a following breeze. A couple of hours later, we made the turn and headed into Mill Creek.  As we were discussing where to anchor for the night, I asked Paula to start the engine. Nothing. Apparently we had used too many amp hours without fully recharging the batteries. We found a quick, convenient place to anchor in Mill Creek Bay, and we dropped the anchor. We gave the batteries a chance to recover but after an hour they still didn't have enough juice to fire off the iron genny. For only the second time in my life, I callled TowBoat US. Captain Mike arrived in an hour and promptly gave us a jump. Bingo!  I let the engine run at high idle for 90 minutes and hoped for the best Tuesday morning. And, our prayers were answered.

Tuesday morning.  We enjoyed eggs and sausage along with coffee and OJ for breakfast before once again getting underway. Once again we caught the breeze, sailing south, tacking once (actually a gentleman's gybe) to sail under the Solomons bridge.  The wind was favorable and we sailed down the river, out past Drum Point and into the Bay. The wind freshened and we hit 7 knots with a full main and yankee.  We were well out into the Chesapeake, when after a series of wind shifts, it appeared the wind was dying. At Green 77 we made the turn to head in.  Suddenly, we experienced a 90-degree wind shift, with the wind coming right out of the mouth of the river.  We trimmed sails and pinched, until I knew we could make Pax 3 without making 2 tacks.  We sailed back into the Patuxent where we doused and covered the sails.  We got in and discussed our calendars, trying to decide when we get back out here again. It was great 3 nights and 3 days of great Fall Sailing on the Chesapeake!  "We live all year for this!"

Paula and I slept on the boat Saturday night and then after breakfast, we backed out of the slip.  We sailed down into the far corner of Pax Bay, and tacked and headed up the river.  The breeze favored us for the next 4 hours, as we did not need to tack the rest of the way to one of our favorite anchorages, "Battle Ck 3".  We set the hook and enjoyed afternoon snacks. This was one of my best sails of 2023!

#82 Paula and I took advantage of the great September weather and sailed!  Under a full main and staysail, we sailed out into the Bay, but the NE15-20 winds had churned up a pretty big chop. We tacked and headed up the Pax River, almost to bridge before turning again and sailing up Back Creek to Spring Cove. We dropped sails and headed for our where we were meeting Dave and our two granddaughters. Great Fall sailing!!! Top speed 7.7 knots.

#81... I had never been out on the RC boat before. I joined Steve, Mariah, and Jonna, and I had a really good time and learned a lot about how the RC boat works to time the races.

It was the last Wednesday night race of the year. The wind started off fine and allowed us a downwind start. We were late to to line. Down and back to the start line would have been enough, with darkness coming earlier. The RC shortened the course to 3 legs, thankfully!  #80 is in the books.

#78... I took advantage of cooler temperatures, and a light SE breeze, along with an easy chop. I paddled to the Breezy Point property line and back, taking my time, soaking it up.  It's not just making 100 days on the water but rather taking in the Bay and wildlife that I see.  This morning I saw an osprey, eagle, yellow butterfly, along with the usual seagulls. 78 is great!  I've got this as long as I stay disciplined and take advantage of opportunities.

In pursuit of 100 days on the water, I logged #’s78 and 79 today. A morning kayak run and an evening single-handed sail tonight in Solomons. Ironically, I passed one of the Miss Susie charter boats tonight. It was onboard Miss Susie II, on December 10th, down on the Potomac, that I hit #100 last year.

I was supposed to sail with Dave and the girls today. We woke to rain, a lousy forecast, and no real wind.  We canceled sailing but I made the most of a flat Bay. I left the house as it was starting to sprinkle again. "Oh well."  For a change, I paddled south to the Breezy Point flagpole. It was a great workout.  I'm working on my paddling strokes. As I got home, it started to sprinkle again. "Perfect."  I hosed my sandals and took an outdoor shower. Number 77 was in the books.

  • Solo sailing 9/9/2023

I got up early and packed my lunch so I could leave directly from Men's Group to head for Solomons. Once onboard, I immediately made the decision to go sailing rather than work on the boat. It was a good call. I was underway at 10:10. My original thought was to either sail out into the Bay or sail as far as I could up the Pax before turning around. I ended up doing neither. Initially, the wind was light and fluky, but it did build in from the SW.  Instead of sailing to a spot, I simply followed the wind, tacking, trimming, and heading to wherever the sailing was best.  I passed Dangerous, Rakali, and Neptune's Wager at one point or another.  I took a few good pics of Dangerous and sent them to Dewey.  It got very hot as the day progressed. I headed back to the slip.  I was out 3 1/2 hours, with a top speed of 6 1/2 knots. The a/c in the car felt great!
