We knew it was going to be breezy, but the weather forecasters were off the mark, way off the mark.
What should have been sustained winds in the upper teens, turned into the mid to upper 20's with gusts to 50+. Only 3 boats on the starting line, we were first up to the Choptank mark and then the "fun" happened. Needless to say, we tore the mainsail, one large hole and several small ones and lost all the battens in the jib. We sailed downwind to PR1, where we took down the main to salvage the sail, turned into the Patuxent River and finished under jib alone.
