Just west of Norfolk, the city of Portsmouth has miles of waterfront along the Elizabeth River as part of the harbor of Hampton Roads.
Founded in 1610, Hampton has been the site of important colonial growth, early commerce and trade, key Civil War events, and the beginning days of NASA. 
Whether arriving by boat on the Chester River or driving in via Route 213, a visit to Chestertown, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, is well worth the trip.
