Old Point Comfort Yacht Club 'Round the Lihgts Race. 52 boats entered on a windy day. Winds forecast 10-15 gusting to 20 diminishing in the afternoon. Instead 15-20 with gusts to 25 and it built. Double handed and not ready to reef. Were flying on the downwind and hit 9 knots ground speed. Never had anywhere near that under sail on Wine Down before. Ended up retiring near Hampton as we were being overpowered. Numerous rig failures incuding one dismasting. 20 boats retired. Waves near five feet in the Bay near Thimble Shoals.

  • Warm enough to still sail in shorts.

Picture perfect day. The Bay was calm and the winds were light out of the south. A sailboat was anchored down by Salt Ponds and I stopped by to say hello. Run back to the beach was serene.

  • Wine Down at Anchor

Karen and I anchored out starting Thursday night for the full moon. Warm calm day with light south winds. Anchored in Back River off Messick Point. Watched a fantastic moonrise and then an aborted launch at Wallops. Friday Walt and Collette Bailey and Ken Damon and Margeret Miller joined us. Don and Julie Gregory stopped by and we all watched the Cygnus missle launch to the International Space station. Another fantastice moonrise. Saturday we took the dinghys exploring into Harris Creek and Saturday night was a fantastic BBQW dinner and live music at Bull Island BBQ. All a stones throw from the anchorage. Spent the night visiting with friends. Brent Wethered stopped by a number of mornings on his daily dolphin patrol. Winds were strong for many of the evenings but the anhorage has a muddy bottom and everyone held with no issues. A rough trip back to HYC on Sunday morning but we did sde dolphins coming into Hampton Roads. All in all a very nice weekend.
