We have found little traffic at Smith Lake, probably because access is only from Quantico Marine Corps base. We are finding it as delightful as our reliable Abel Reservoir.

  • After kayaking

Just a quick paddle at Abel Reservoir in between rain drizzle and mist. We weren’t alone as there were a few fishermen out on shore and kayaks.
We have found so much joy this year with our kayaks.

  • Mooney Lake

Today was our first kayaking trip on Mooney Lake in Stafford. We had checked it out before on a weekend and it was so busy there wasn’t a place to park our SUV so we went to our old stand by. We saved Mooney Lake for an overcast day because we didn’t see any shade when we had been there before. Our trip today validated no shade as the sun popped out. A great paddle to add to our list of great kayaking local locales.

  • Nice warm paddle at Abel Reservoir

It’s a beautiful sunny day so we drove over to Abel Reservoir after we voted in the Presidential Election at Stafford Airport. There was a nice gentle breeze on the lake and we are beginning to see signs of autumn.

  • It’s a long sleeve kind of day

Brr....it’s a cold day for kayaking but that didn’t stop us from getting out. So cold even the turtles were sunning on anything out of the water!

  • Brisk Yakking on Smith Lake

55 degrees out and bundled up paddling on Smith Lake. It was brisk, sunny, and absolutely beautiful as we checked out the lake from the second launch site. Much prefer this launch site over the one we used before.

  • We did it!

It took everything I had to get motivated to get dressed and log our 100th day...not sure why but perhaps reaching the goal was anticlimactic? Finally warmed up after lunch and we went out and just did it. Nice relaxing paddle and before we loaded Chill and Zen back on the car, Jeff attached his sail gear from his Eagle inflatable kayak and took Chill out for a short sail.

  • A cold start of the day

Brrr....even waiting until 9A before we left the house! It was overcast, a little breezy and 59 degrees! That didn’t deter us from getting on the water. Kayaked for an hour and that was enough for us, as we both were still feeling the effects of a 3 hour paddle on Sunday.

  • Nice Quiet Paddle on Abel Reservoir

Amazing what 24 hours can show....yesterday Abel Reservoir was packed so we went to Smith Lake instead. Today, at Abel Reservoir, it was just us and a fisherman on the shore fishing.
Had a nice quiet and relaxing paddle.

  • Beautiful morning on Smith Lake

We headed over to our go to site at Abel Reservoir, but it was jammed packed. There must have been a fishing tournament so Rocky Pen wouldn’t work either. So.....off to Quantico Marine Corps base and a beautiful and long paddle on Smith Lake!
