With the scorching weather, we went to our go to Abel Reservoir for a quick and refreshing paddle.

Since there is virtually no wind today, we opted to celebrate Summer Sailstice on our kayaks instead of motor sailing on our beloved Melanna. Another beautiful paddle and first sail on Abel Reservoir near home.
Day 40 on the water brought us to explore Smith Lake at Quantico Marine Corps base. This is very close to our home in Stafford. The lake is beautiful and we really enjoyed our paddle there. Saw a few turtles warming up on logs and a fawn on the Stafford shoreline. Most notably, we assessed this will be a great spot for leaf peeping in the fall.
Found a weather window today that let us back on the water today. Back to our closest go to and had a lovely paddle. Saw kingfishers again but they’re too fast for us to snag a photo, lots of turtles, and we were able to snag a photo of an egret. We also met a couple of student researchers from Mary Washington University Biology Department who were out cataloging turtles. Fun and interesting day on the Reservoir.
Back at Abel Reservoir again! Glad I wore long sleeves today as it was cloudy, breezy, and 68 degrees! Long sleeves also came in handy as it drizzled off and on this morning while we were out.
Back at our go to with our kayaks since Abel Reservoir is closest to our house. Nice breeze and sunny skies. We’re becoming addicted to kayaking!
Had a great time kayaking on Curtis Lake in our hometown of Stafford. Glad we wore long sleeves and pants because it was pretty cool out on the lake with the breezes.
Today’s adventure was a cool and refreshing paddle on the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg, VA. We were paddling in the area of George Washington’s boyhood home. Lots of kayaks, paddle boards, canoes, and floats on the water today.
We bought kayaks recently and have been practicing with them the last few days near our home at Abel Lake Reservoir in Stafford, VA. We feel comfortable enough now to graduate to lake kayaking tomorrow. Also it’s turning out to be a great way working towards our 100 days on the water.
We went out to our home port (Herrington Harbour North) and spent six days sailing in the Bay and/or kayaking in Rockhold Creek.
